Charlotte County Jail Overview
The Charlotte County Jail is operated by the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Bureau of Detention at 26601 Airport Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33982. Major Ryan Barber is listed as Bureau of Detention Commander. The inmate handout describes the jail as a newer, state-of-the-art, tobacco-free facility. It holds people arrested in Charlotte County, those awaiting first appearance or trial, sentenced county inmates, and federal inmates housed under a U.S. Marshals Service contract. Housing is assigned by classification, which weighs current charges, prior record, age, sex, behavior, and medical concerns.
The sheriff's Bureau of Detention page lists the jail command staff, address, and mission, as shown on the CCSO Bureau of Detention page.
That page is the official front door for the jail, and the rest of this page covers how to look someone up and how to reach them inside.
Charlotte County Jail Population

Booking and Intake at the Charlotte County Jail
The inmate handout sets out the local intake path. All people arrested in Charlotte County are brought to the jail to be processed and to appear before a judge at First Appearance Court, except those arrested on U.S. Marshals holds, parole violations, or civil actions. Anyone who does not bond out or is not released at first appearance is housed in the facility, and where they are housed comes from classification.
Intake is also a medical checkpoint. In 2024 the jail logged 6,822 intake encounters as part of a heavy medical workload. At admission each inmate gets a personal money account, and cash in hand is placed into it. The court-side path after booking, including filed charges and court dates, is covered on the court records after a jail arrest page.
Programs and Medical Services at the Charlotte County Jail
The jail runs a full program slate and a heavy medical operation. In 2024, program attendance reached 6,654 across GED classes, anger management, substance abuse, batterers intervention and relationship skills, Alcoholics Anonymous, parenting, discharge planning and reentry, and faith-based courses. Electronic programs delivered through inmate communication devices began in 2018 and added anger management, drug and alcohol awareness, parenting, and domestic violence courses for people who cannot attend in person.
On the medical side, the jail logged 442 doctor encounters, 1,747 ARNP encounters, 39,877 nurse encounters, 941 dental exams, and 776 mental-health encounters in 2024. Inmate fees apply to some services, such as a $5 nurse sick call and a $3 prescription fee, while a psychiatrist visit carries no charge. The grievance process is tracked as well, with 3,465 grievances submitted in 2024 and the sheriff sorting them into true, founded, and unfounded counts.
